Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) are pivotal in designing data science research projects due to their multifaceted importance. D&I fosters a spectrum of perspectives and experiences within research teams, which fuels innovation and leads to more comprehensive approaches to data science problems. This diversity enhances the depth and richness of research outcomes. D&I promote equity by ensuring that individuals from all backgrounds have equal opportunities to participate in data science research. This reduces disparities and biases in research and harnesses a diverse pool of talent, making the field more accessible and inclusive. D&I are essential for upholding the ethical standards of research. They help recognise and address biases, ensuring fairness and transparency in data collection, analysis, and reporting. Ethical considerations are essential to the integrity and credibility of research. Finally, D&I align research teams with the complexity of real-world data science applications. Many societal challenges require solutions for diverse user needs, cultural contexts, and impacts. In essence, the importance of D&I in data science research projects extends far beyond ethical imperatives; it underpins the quality, fairness, and societal relevance of research endeavours.

The D&I panel in SIMBIG 2023 focuses on the perspective of the design of D&I-aware research programs and projects with an original and disruptive view addressing gender-aware methodologies that work on a critical vision of technology-driven solutions. Recognising that our conference lacks knowledge about alternative, equity and diverse perspectives of scientific methods, we organised a panel titled “Practices and methodologies for designing data science research projects”. We invited distinguished panellists who are scientists leading actions and integrating D&I policies in their environment and domain of expertise.
A Diversity and Inclusion Panel in designing data science research projects is essential for promoting fairness, innovation, and responsible research practices. It recognizes that diversity and inclusion are ethical imperatives and drivers of excellence and relevance in data science research.
Thought-provoking questions about practices and methodologies for designing data science research projects with a gender perspective in civil, academic, and professional environments:
- How can (data science) research projects be structured to address gender disparities and promote gender equality in civil society, particularly in urban mobility, professional empowerment, and professional international collaboration?
- Is it possible to adopt a feminist and inclusion perspective to data-driven research? Provide examples in your practice and guidelines for those scientists willing to include this perspective in their research.
- How are academic institutions integrating gender perspectives into data science research and curricula, and what initiatives are in place to encourage diversity in data science programs?
- What methodologies effectively conduct gender-inclusive research and analysis in academic settings, and how can interdisciplinary collaboration be fostered?
- How can academic research projects contribute to a deeper understanding of gender-related issues, such as the gender pay gap or gender-based violence, and inform evidence-based solutions?
- How can professionals address ethical considerations related to gender data privacy and consent when working on research projects in urbanism and mobility?
- In what ways can (data science) research inform corporate policies and practices that promote gender equity in the workplace and beyond?
Objective and format of the panel
The panel aims to address the question of developing practices and methodologies for designing data science research projects with a gender perspective in civil, academic, and professional environments. It gathers different perspectives from researchers who have studied the issue through a series of questions that seek to investigate the challenges and possible alternatives.
The panel will take place in two rounds.
- In the first round, panellists will prepare and present a 5-minute presentation on gender disparities and the promotion of gender equality in civil society, particularly in areas like urban mobility, professional empowerment, and professional international collaboration, using the thought-provoking questions as a reference.
- In the second round, the debate will be open to the public and to moderators who will propose further questions to encourage discussion among the panellists.
- The moderators will make introductory and concluding statements to open/close the panel.
Panellists
Luciana Ayciriex (she/her) is a Senior Researcher at INMARK, working on the GENDER STI project to promote the integration of the gender perspective in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) in bilateral and multilateral dialogues between Europe and third countries. She has 17 years of experience managing international cooperation on STI and has been involved in more than 25 projects. She worked with international authorities, promoting STI dialogue between main actors responsible for national Science and Technology policy. At the Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation in Argentina, she also led the Political Dialogue on STI between Latin America, the Caribbean, and the European Union in the framework of the EU-LAC Senior Officials Meetings.
In Spain, she led the support office for the internationalization of research at the Faculty of Psychology at the Autonomous University of Madrid, project manager of ERC projects at the National Distance Education University and Technology Transfer and European Programs Adviser at Fundación para el Conocimiento Madri+d. She is an evaluator of international development cooperation projects.
Sagrario Castillo Camporro (she/her) has a PhD in Urbanism from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Her research within his doctoral studies is on quality of life and public policies and the relationship between the two to positively modify the daily lives of citizens in the urban space. She obtained her master’s degree in 2016 in UNAM with the research project Territorial Transformations and their Impact on the Character of Public Space. The case of the Alameda Corridor 1980-2015. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the Universidad de las Americas, Puebla in 1994. To obtain her bachelor’s degree, she carried out the research project Revitalization of Barrio La Luz.
Sagrario Castillo Camporro has acquired experience in projects that produce tools and mechanisms for the city’s problems and the population there. From the degree projects, she has analyzed the social issues associated with specific tasks of discrimination and exclusion. Dr. Castillo-Camporro participated in the First Congress of City Studies held by the University Program of City Studies at UNAM. Likewise, a webinar was held for students from Cuauhtémoc University who are interested in social and city aspects. He has published internationally with titles such as: From Data Harvesting to Querying for Making Urban Territories Smart, A Holistic for Measuring Quality of Life in La Condesa District in Mexico City and nationally with the article Public Policies and Quality of Life in Mexico: a quantitative study and qualitative analysis of the four central mayors of Mexico City (Benito Juárez, Cuauhtémoc, Miguel Hidalgo and Venustiano Carranza).
Greta Temporin (she/her) is a PhD student in Management, Production and Design at Politecnico di Torino. With a background in law, her research project focuses on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) management in public administration and academia, especially in the STEM fields. She is part of the GReG executive committee and coordinates PoliWo – PoliTo for Women. Her scholarship was funded by the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
Moderators
Barbara Catania (she/her) is a Professor at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Genova, Italy, where she co-heads the Database and Information System Group. She is the head of the Master of Science and the Bachelor degrees in Computer Science at the University of Genova. She received her PhD in Computer Science from the University of Milan, Italy. She graduated from the University of Genova with a degree in information sciences.
Her main research interests concern advanced data management and analysis, specifically to models, languages, centralized and large-scale architectures, data integration, query optimization, stored and streaming data, geo-referenced data, semantic data, and ethical data management and analysis aspects. She has participated in numerous scientific and industrial research projects on these topics.
She is a National Inter-university Consortium for Informatics (CINI) Big Data Research Lab member. She promotes gender equality, diversity, and inclusion (D&I) in education and research. She is an ADBIS D&I officer representing ADBIS endowment in the inter-conference initiative D&I databases.
Genoveva Vargas-Solar (she/her http://www.vargas-solar.com) is a principal scientist of the French Council of Scientific Research (CNRS) and a member of the DataBase group of Laboratory on Informatics on Image and Information Systems (LIRIS). She is a regular member of the Mexican Academia of Computing. She obtained her Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR – tenure) from the University of Grenoble. She obtained her first PhD degree in Computer Science at the University Joseph Fourier and her second PhD degree in Literature at the University of Stendhal. She obtained her first master’s degree in computer science at the University Joseph Fourier and her second in Comparative Literature at the University Stendhal. She did her undergraduate studies in Computer Systems Engineering at Universidad de las Américas in Puebla. She contributes to the construction of service-based database/data science management systems. She promotes gender equality, diversity, and inclusion (D&I) actions. She is an officer of the gender equality committee at LIRIS. She represents her lab at the Commission of Equity and Diversity of the U. of Lyon and the Federation of Informatics of Lyon. She represents EDBT’s endowment in the inter-conference initiative D&I databases. She actively promotes scientific cooperation in Computer Science between Latin America and Europe, particularly France and Mexico.
Ester Zumpano is an Associate Professor of Computer Engineering at the Department of Computer Engineering, Modeling, Electronics and Systems (DIMES) and Research Associate at the CNR-NANOTEC (https://people.dimes.unical.it/esterzumpano/).
She received a PhD in Computer Science in 2003. Her research areas include health information systems, data integration, logic programming, view updating, Artificial Intelligence, and database management. She is a member of the Steering Committee of ADBIS Conf. She is a member of the Scientific Board of the Ph.D. Course in Information and Communication Technologies, University of Calabria, Italy. She is the promoter of a teaching/research agreement between UNICAL and the National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech), Taiwan and between the DIMES and the Computer and the Communication Engineering/ SCIT/FOE of the MANIPAL UNIVERSITY JAIPUR, India and. She is a founding member of ITACA S.r.l. Spin-off. She participated in many R&D projects, was a program chair/PC member of many international conferences/workshops, member of the Editor Board of the Journal of Intelligent Information Systems and the Journal of Big Data and Cognitive Computing; guest editor for Intelligent Systems with Applications, Journal of Logic and Computation (JLC) and Information Systems Journal.
